I thought it would be interesting to see what forms are considered the best and how come. I will give you my vote too, just after some of you have taken a step out and given your opinion first.

Taeguek ryuk jang deals with both lateral (side to side) and vertical (up and down) movements. It also switches between very defensives postures into solid offensive movements quickly and smoothly. Another form that does this is chil jang, but the blocks and strikes in that form don't fit my bill of "best form". I'd have to say Taeguek ryuk jang teaches you the most fundemental principles in a single form, so it gets my best colored belt form vote!

I would have to go for Tageuk Sam Jang because it contains pratical movements and blocks as well as good combinations of kicks and punches and a powerful ending.

Forms? Forms? Forms! I wish I could work on forms. Namikoshi, Anma long form, Kawaguchi, Swedish, Tuina...I just spent twelve months learning forms, and now they've taken them away & said I have to make up my own form for the final exam! And it has to be forty-five minutes long!

Oh wait, that wasn't the kind of kata we were talking about, was it? My head is so full of homework...I really miss the dojang.

Forms are still forms. They will still teach details, perseverance, precision, discipline in practice, concentration and more. Whether healing someone or breaking them, forms help to make us more effective.
